1 February 2011:
Egypt’s ongoing civil
unrest continues across the country with reports that more than 100 people have
been killed and many more injured during rioting. Since 25 January 2011,
violent demonstrations have occurred at locations across Egypt including Cairo,
Alexandria and Suez.
The Foreign and
Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised
against all but essential travel to Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez.
The nationwide curfew has been
extended from 1500-0800 local time. Travellers in Egypt are
being advised to respect curfew provisions and follow the advice of local
authorities.
Internet traffic has
been suspended throughout much of Egypt, with only sporadic access available at
some hotels. Mobile phone service, including SMS, is also down. Landlines
remain unaffected for the time being.
The FCO recommend
that British nationals without a pressing need to be in Cairo, Alexandria or
Suez leave by commercial means where it is safe to do so. The situation does not affect transits
through Cairo airport for onward travel to other international destinations, although
there is some disruption to flight schedules.
Please contact the airline prior to
travelling to the airport to get the latest departure status on your flights.
British nationals in other areas of Egypt
where there are demonstrations should follow the advice of local authorities, avoid
demonstrations and stay indoors wherever possible.
